What is the Science of Reading?
The Science of Reading is a large body of research that explains how children learn to read and which instructional practices are most effective. It combines research from education, psychology, neuroscience, and language development to help children become strong, confident readers.
At PACA Reading Lab, we use Science of Reading strategies to help students build foundational literacy skills in a fun, engaging, and supportive environment.
Key Components of the Science of Reading

Phonemic Awareness
Hearing and working with sounds in spoken words. -
Phonics
Learning how letters and letter combinations connect to sounds. -
Fluency
Reading smoothly, accurately, and with expression. -
Vocabulary
Building understanding of word meanings and language. -
Comprehension
Understanding, discussing, and thinking deeply about what is read.
Reading Lab Book List
Classes Begin June 2nd
Pre-K & Kinder
Our Pre-K and Kindergarten Reading Lab focuses on confidence, friendship, emotions, family, imagination, and discovering what makes each child unique. Through playful stories, movement, discussion, and hands-on activities, students build early literacy skills while learning important social and emotional lessons in a joyful and engaging environment.
1st & 2nd Grade
Our 1st and 2nd Grade Reading Lab explores themes such as courage, perseverance, empathy, dreams, storytelling, kindness, and self-expression. Students strengthen reading comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, and critical thinking through meaningful discussions, interactive activities, and high-quality literature that encourages deeper connections to reading and the world around them.
Join Virtual or In Person
Families may choose to participate in the PACA Reading Lab either virtually or in person. Our virtual classes provide an interactive small-group experience from the comfort of home, while our in-person classes offer hands-on learning, discussion, and engaging activities in a warm classroom environment. Both options follow the same high-quality Science of Reading-based instruction and use the same featured books and literacy skills throughout the session.
