5 Benefits of Block Play

Updated: Nov 15, 2022

Every child should have a set of blocks; which offer tremendous educational benefits. Block play is an opportunity to build, and develop skills in language, math, science and more.We will explore five benefits of block play; encouraging parents to add block play to their child's home school routine.

  1. Math Concepts - As children build with blocks they are learning foundational math concepts such as one to one correspondence, geometry, comparing numbers, sorting, patterns, comparing sizes, lengths and number value. Children gain understanding as they need one more block to complete their tower; they may need three red blocks to create a patterned building or they may need a triangle block to add a roof to their house, which is why construction play is so important.

  2. Problem Solving - As kids build with blocks they are able to explore what works and what does not. This gives them the opportunity to think critically, reasonably and come up with resolutions to solve problems.

  3. Physical Development - In the process of lifting, moving, and building children develop spatial awareness, hand and eye coordination, fine and gross motor skills as well as strengthening their hands and fingers.

  4. Increased Attention Span - Children usually spend more time playing with blocks than any other toy as they push to accomplish the goal they set for themselves. They may want to build a bridge, a large house or a really tall tower; refusing to do anything else until it's completed; which in return can increase their concentration.

  5. Cooperation - Block play promotes cooperation and team work. As kids partner with a friend in their construction task, they learn how to work together, share ideas, settle disputes, problem solve ,and how to compromise.

Bonus: Science - Children can explore concepts such as gravity, balance, and weight. Playing with blocks allows kids to practice STEM principles, and scientific reasoning.
